2023 is well underway, and Spotlight On is back at it with Series 8 of the podcast. The new series of the podcast kicks off host and Lyte Commercial Director Lawrence Peryer talking to immensely influential post-punk group, That Petrol Emotion.
Rising from the ashes of Northern Irish pop-punks The Undertones, former band members the O'Neill brothers pursued an entirely different path with That Petrol Emotion. Recruiting American vocalist Steve Mack and guitarist Raymond Gorman, the band merged music, culture, and politics which resulted in an urgent and vibrant new sound across each of their five albums.
Mainstream success eluded That Petrol Emotion due to their genre-hopping approach to songwriting and their political identities which wider audiences struggled to connect with. On the flipside however, their innovation proved incredibly influential, leaving a legacy that no doubt inspired both the Madchester era and Britpop revolution throughout the 80s and 90s.
Throughout this episode of the podcast, Peryer talks to both Mack and Gorman about the band’s passion and their potential, as well their initial bitterness about lack of mainstress success which later shifted to contentment over their lasting influence.
