In the brand new episode in Series 7 of Spotlight On, host and Lyte Chief Commercial Officer Lawrence Peryer welcomes composer, musician, educator, and sound artist Duncan Chapman to the podcast.

Based in Lincolnshire, England, much of Duncan Chapman’s work involves collaboration with a vast array of creatives from various fields. He frequently produces multimedia performances, installations, and recordings with leading music organizations throughout the world.

His impressive list of collaborations in Britain include projects with The Philharmonia Orchestra, London Sinfonietta, Royal Festival Hall, Spitalfields Music, Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, Wigmore Hall, Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, Sound Festival, Buxton Festival, BBC, and Sound & Music.

Chapman also works further afield – regularly partnering with global institutions – having worked on concept pieces in cities like Tokyo and Singapore. The composer has devised a number of installations throughout Europe too, directing the 2013 Sonópolis project at the Casa De Musica in Porto, creating sonic postcards and landscape composition projects at the Verbier Festival in Switzerland, as well as working on a site specific performance with singer/choreographer Isabel Jones in Tallinn for the ‘Fragile?' Dance, Arts & Visual Impairment Symposium called ‘Ad Astra’.

Alongside contributing to courses at De Montfort, York, and Aberdeen University, Chapman is currently developing participatory events using the new multichannel sound system at x-church in Gainsborough, undertaking a sound mapping residency in North Lincolnshire and uncovering the sounds that define the district.

Throughout the episode, the fascinating sound artist discusses his education in music and photography, what he feels gives a location its ambience, and the unique sounds he’s still searching for.
